Reading through a few posts it seems that those in WA all have aides to help there kids at school. Does anyone know of it happening in Victoria? How do others manage at school without any support? _________________ Mum to Jonny 3yrs old. D @ 18mths. Pumping since 2009 |

Hi Penny,
No, we dont necessarily have aides in WA, it depends on the school.
G is at a private school and has never had an aide, although she was not diagnosed until age 7.
I would contact the local Dept of Education and see how you go about applying.

Here's a tip....if you are at a private school don't ever contact the Education Dept as they will refuse to help you. We had an incident (non-D related) where my wife contacted the Ed Dept for some advice. The person was all nice and sweet but once they found out our kids were at private school she literally hung up! _________________ Dad to DD IDDM since 11/04

Hi Penny,
No aide here. My son manages his pump independently. Staff oversee numbers he enters into it, BGLs and follow up as necessary according to his management plan. Staff members have been fantastic.
Another child I know (who is also 6) goes to a local Catholic school and has an aide who covers morning tea / lunch times and basically does the bolusing.
Probably depends on which system you're in, but I don't know of anyone (with type 1) at a state school with aide funding in Victoria. Aide time in Vic is very hard to come by. That said, I didn't even think about applying! |

Nat attended a Catholic primary school for grades 4, 5 and 6 then a State High school in Vic, outer east of Melbourne...no aide at either, not that he needed one..but there was no discussion/offer as to want or need. _________________ qui scribit bis legit.. |

For what it's worth we don't have aides here in Tas either.
AMK, in regards to contacting the Education Department, I asked a friend of mine who is a teacher at a private catholic school about that. No, the education department wouldn't be able to help you because it isn't a government school. She suggested that if it is a catholic school to contact the Catholic Education Office if you have issues that can't be resolved with the school. Failing that, contact the education minister in your state.
Hope that helps. |
