Hi All
Although its been a while since I have really posted on MP I still lurk quite a bit and have been wondering how everyone and their offspring are getting on in general.

Dylan turned 17yrs old a couple of weeks ago and is well and truly into Yr 12. He seems to be coping fairly well although Trial HSC exams are in a couple of weeks which he is getting into stress mode for.

He is still in the U17 Development team for Wests (Rugby league) as well as playing both league and union for the school. He is looking at opportunities at the next level with union at the moment. I am quite sure he doesn't care whether he plays league or union ... as long as there is a ball involved he is happy! Touch wood there haven't been any serious injuries of late. His shin splints seem to be ok now although he does do a fair bit to keep them ok like icing his legs daily and doing the exercises.

As far as diabetes goes (again touch wood!) it all seems to be pretty good. Dylan still has what most would consider a pump regime without the pump. He is taking lantus and novo and generally seems to inject about 6-8 times a day as he injects novo whenever he eats and if he is higher than he would like. It seems to me (and some others!) a lot but it is working really well for him and he doesn't have the slightest bit of interest in changing it. The pre game hypos seem to be generally under control and he also seems to control the post game highs well too. He considers a bsl of 10 or over to be high and will generally correct to bring it down. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was pleased to see bsls of 10 or below! He has had a tooth abscess over the last week which has been quite nasty but he has still managed to keep his levels under 10 despite being on a combination of antibiotics.

All in all life is pretty good for him at the moment. He still does talks at his school and other schools on occassion about diabetes and is happy enough to talk about it in general but it certainly is not a focus in life. I think it comes somewhere below making his bed when home and remembering not get sand all through the car after going surfing!

Hope everyone else and their families are well.

Hi, glad to hear all is going so well. I always read the posts on older kids to see what we have to look forward to. My 10 yr old has just gone back to union this season, our first time with a pump. He survived the first carnival unscathed so fingers crossed. As he wants a career in football it is nice to let him read your post and see that D is no reason to stop this dream. We once told him about Steve Renouf, but he is too young to know the name. We will now be taking a keen interest in your sons career as a reference. Good luck to your whole family during exam time. Millie

Thanks Millie

I'm not sure if you are aware but Steve Renouf and his family often do talks etc for branches of Diabetes Australia and other Diabetes organisations. We went to one in regional NSW when Dylan was about 13yrs which he really enjoyed.

Hope the rugby season goes well for your son.

Hi Sandpaper

It's great that Dylan is doing so well! Moving to Sydney seems like it's been a "good thing" for you two.

Sorry I didn't reply the first time you asked... K - as you may have seen from other posts - is continuing to grow up! She got her p-plates a few weeks ago, and bought a car last week (1/2 with money she'd saved, 1/2 with from me as her Christmas and birthday present from December 2009). But she hasn't been able to drive her car yet cos of glandular fever and associated painkillers :( K has been sick now for almost 3 weeks... but she seems to be getting a bit better. She goes back to her GP tomorrow and we'll see if we can arrange for her to go to work for a few hours a day later this week.

Diabetes-wise, she's going pretty well. We had to do a few adjustments because of less activity while she's sick - but she's generally coping with everything really well - and is excited about her car (which is strictly speaking not a car, but a ute - dual cab with canopy)!
